At Osprey Dominion vineyards on Long Island’s North Fork, ninety acres of vinifera grapes grow under the watchful eye of master winemaker Adam Suprenant. The first Osprey’s Domion vines were planted on 24 acres in Peconic in 1983. An additional 16 acre parcel in Mattituck was purchased and planted in the late 1980s, and after the early 1990s, when another 50 acres were purchased at the winery’s Main road location in Peconic, the company began producing and selling the Osprey brand.

Located at approximately the same latitude as the great wine growing regions of France and sheltered by both the Long Island Sound and Peconic Bay, Osprey’s Dominion enjoys unique farming soil that contributes greatly to the quality and character of their grapes and their multitude of award-winning wines.

The overall philosophy of the vineyard is to produce the best wines with the least interference from humankind. ‘Reserve’ wines are only produced in those years where the right conditions of sun and rain combine to create the potential for truly outstanding wines.

Osprey’s Dominion grows 13 varietals of grape, the most of any vineyard on Long Island. These include Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Malbec, Tannat, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and Carmenere. With the most varietals, they also have the widest selection of wines of any Long Island winery, including an Edelzwicker and Spice Wine. In 2012, the vineyard launched an entirely new label, Richmond Creek, to compliment the Osprey line.

The beautiful tasting room includes a large tasting bar, inside seating, and large windows overlooking the expansive lawn and vines. The winery allows guests to bring their own picnic lunches, which most Long Island wineries no longer allow. Osprey’s Dominion also offers three free BBQ stations, volleyball, an outside wine bar between April and October, and 36 picnic tables on their four acre “great lawn.” There is free live music on weekends.

Tasting flights include $5 for 3 wines, $8 for 5 wines and special flights that include cheese platters and souvenir wine glasses for $25. The beautiful, relaxed surroundings and award-winning wines make Osprey’s Dominion vineyard a true must-see destination on Long Island’s famous wine trail.
